A futon bed may seem like a modern invention; however, it really is not. The Japanese have used a futon bed for a number of years as a way to provide comfortable sleeping in limited spaces. Traditionally, a futon bed could be rolled up and stored away when it was not being used. One of the reasons that a futon bed became so popular in Japan is the fact that many rooms had to serve multiple purposes. Since a futon bed could be stored away, this made it possible for rooms to easily be converted from one use to another.
