During the 1960s, the futon bed became popular around the world. In the United States, in particular, the futon bed became quite popular, especially among young people. During the 1970s a major change was made in the futon bed and that was the addition of what was known as the convertible frame. This made it possible to convert the futon bed into a couch when it was not being used as a bed.

As a result, the versatile futon bed became increasingly popular during the 1980s. Numerous amenities and comforts were added to the futon bed including coils, pocket springs and innersprings to make the futon bed even more comfortable.
