Case hardened steel has gone through a process that keeps the inside soft and flexible so it won’t shatter while simultaneously hardening the outside so it is very difficult to break. Pot metal, on the other hand, is generally made of leftover scrap metal and, as such, it is very soft and easily broken; the same goes for aluminum hardware. Another term to keep an eye out for is “wall-hugger.” This refers to a futon that doesn’t have to move away from the wall in order to convert it from one form to the other. Although it sounds like a great idea, they are very difficult to function and easily damaged and broken.
